Prof. Dr. C. Otto Scharmer: Everything is getting faster, and the more speed, complexity, turbulence, and disruption increase, the harder it is to create high-quality spaces for thinking and reflection—and the more crucial it becomes. Leadership, as I understand it, is about “shaping context.” Ultimately, it’s about creating the right conditions so that, as a leadership team, we can respond to challenges more creatively rather than reactively. This requires good spaces and that’s why Marbach Castle is so important to me.
Question: You mentioned the speed of this change. How do you find peace here?
Prof. Dr. C. Otto Scharmer: Speeding up requires slowing down. To speed up, you must first slow down. It’s about the ability to decelerate and not just stay in the same mode, but to pause and find a deeper connection. What challenges and disruptions are we truly facing, and what is required of us? Where are the real leverage points for our innovations? Identifying these leverage points requires a new culture of conversation, a new way of thinking, and a highly creative mode within the top team, but also within other teams in the organization. To achieve this, you need to change the context. That’s exactly why I’ve been coming to Marbach Castle with leadership teams for the past 15 years. Marbach Castle is an ideal place, especially for smaller, mid-sized groups, where this shift in thinking and a deepening of one’s own self-reflection can be achieved.
