Prof. Dr. C. Otto Scharmer is an internationally recognized thought leader in leadership, change processes, and systems thinking. As the initiator of Theory U, he uniquely bridges research and practice. At MIT and the Presencing Institute, he develops and teaches methods for deep organizational transformation. His focus: collective intelligence, sustainable change, and shaping future-ready leadership cultures. In the Leadership Talk, Professor Scharmer shares insights on his collaboration with Marbach Castle.
Question: Professor Scharmer, you are an authority on leadership and change management. You bring your thoughts and methods to many large companies, driving leadership and innovation. You’ve been doing this for 15 years at Marbach Castle. What makes this place so important and suitable for conveying these ideas?
Prof. Dr. C. Otto Scharmer: Everything is getting faster, and the more speed, complexity, turbulence, and disruption increase, the harder it is to create high-quality spaces for thinking and reflection—and the more crucial it becomes. That’s precisely what this place is about. Leadership, as I understand it, is about “shaping context.” Ultimately, it’s about creating the right conditions so that, as a leadership team, we can respond to challenges more creatively rather than reactively. This requires good spaces and that’s why Marbach Castle is so important to me.
Question: You mentioned the speed of this change. How do you find peace here?
Prof. Dr. C. Otto Scharmer: Speeding up requires slowing down. To speed up, you must first slow down. It’s about the ability to decelerate and not just stay in the same mode, but to pause and find a deeper connection. What challenges and disruptions are we truly facing, and what is required of us? Where are the real leverage points for our innovations? Identifying these leverage points requires a new culture of conversation, a new way of thinking, and a highly creative mode within the top team, but also within other teams in the organization. To achieve this, you need to change the context. That’s exactly why I’ve been coming to Marbach Castle with leadership teams for the past 15 years. Marbach Castle is an ideal place, especially for smaller, mid-sized groups, where this shift in thinking and a deepening of one’s own self-reflection can be achieved.

Conclusion:
Prof. Dr. Otto Scharmer highlights the unique role of Marbach Castle as a place for future-oriented leadership and deep transformation. In times of growing complexity, we need spaces that foster qualitative thinking and strategic reflection. For Scharmer, effective leadership means responding creatively—not reactively—to challenges. And for that, slowing down is essential. Marbach Castle offers exactly the kind of environment where new cultures of thought and dialogue can emerge—laying the foundation for lasting innovation and transformation.
What does Otto Scharmer’s Theory U propose?
Theory U by Prof. Dr. C. Otto Scharmer is a systems-based framework for shaping profound transformation in organizations and society. Developed at MIT and advanced through the Presencing Institute, it is a cornerstone of modern organizational consulting—particularly in leadership, education, and business transformation. Its goal is not merely to treat symptoms, but to sense and shift underlying systemic patterns in service of regenerative and ecological development.
At its core, the theory outlines a U-shaped process: from analyzing the past, to letting go of entrenched thinking and behavior, and arriving at what Scharmer calls Presencing—a state of deep awareness in which future potential becomes visible. From this space, new actions emerge, grounded in emotional intelligence, rational insight, and creative will. Scharmer emphasizes that the future cannot be predicted—it must be invented by consciously shaping spaces of possibility.
Theory U emphasizes sensing situational dynamics, aesthetics as a field of resonance, and the intentional recollection of inner resources. It distinguishes itself from classical psychotherapeutic models by operating more in the realm of collective learning. In a world often marked by overstimulation and speed, it offers a counter-model: mindfulness, presence, and space for the “spirit” of shared development. Scharmer’s theory stands for systems thinking—and for action that not only accompanies change, but enables it.
How exactly does Theory U support leadership development?
Theory U by Prof. Dr. Claus Otto Scharmer, co-founder of the u-school for Transformation and lecturer at MIT’s Sloan School, offers leaders a structured approach to shaping complex change on individual, organizational, and societal levels. Rooted in systems theory, it integrates practical methods from leadership, dialogue, and organizational learning.
At its core lies attention: those who lead must learn to sharpen their perception—of themselves, their teams, and the situation. Prof. Scharmer describes a shift from reactive to creative action. In the state of Presence—a deep connection between the present and future potential—space opens for ideas that arise not from the past, but from what is becoming possible.
Leadership here is not about exerting power, but about creating conditions for collective development. Blind spots within organizations become visible, and awareness of institutional spirit and dynamics grows. Spiritual aspects such as hope, inner strength, and the connection between matter and meaning are also part of the concept—without drifting into esotericism.
Especially in times of economic and societal upheaval, Theory U helps re-imagine leadership—not as reaction, but as a responsible creative force. It reshapes our understanding of leadership: away from top-down control, toward an open, learning-oriented stance in a diverse and complex world.
What is Presencing?
Presencing is a central concept in Prof. Dr. C. Otto Scharmer’s Theory U. It describes the moment when inner clarity connects with emerging future potential. Presencing is a key to deep transformation—unlike traditional therapy, it does not focus on individual processing, but on collective awareness and generative action through social infrastructures that enable shared learning.
In his book Theory U, Scharmer explains how leaders can access intuitive knowledge through Presencing. In times when decision-making becomes increasingly complex, this state strengthens the sense of responsibility. Presencing fosters a deeper quality of collective reflection and decision-making—especially in transformation processes supported by coaching or consulting. The first publication on this concept appeared in 2007.
Who are Otto Scharmer’s lectures best suited for?
Prof. Dr. C. Otto Scharmer’s lectures are aimed at leaders, decision-makers, and change agents from business, government, education, and civil society—both nationally and globally. They are especially suited for individuals engaged in systemic change, innovative consulting, and sustainable transformation. As a professor at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), he offers practical insights grounded in rigorous research.
His approach resonates with people who recognize complex social challenges and actively contribute to shaping future-ready organizations and societies. Central to this is the cultivation of collective awareness and the strengthening of learning communities. Those who rethink leadership understand that the future cannot be predicted—it must be co-created through mindful action. Scharmer’s lectures provide orientation, depth, and tools—for individuals, teams, and organizations in transition. He makes transformation tangible.
Why are Scharmer’s lectures held at Marbach Castle?
For Prof. Dr. C. Otto Scharmer, true transformation begins with a moment of stillness. Slowing down is not a luxury—it’s a prerequisite for recognizing deeper connections and acting with impact. Marbach Castle provides the ideal setting for this: surrounded by nature, openness, and silence, it becomes a space of resonance that fosters clarity. Here, method and atmosphere converge—allowing Theory U to unfold its full potential. Those who attend Scharmer’s lectures at Marbach Castle don’t just gain fresh insights; they experience that change begins where spirit, space, and community come together. A place for leadership with depth.
