Maximizing Conference Success with Optimal Nutrition
Nutrition plays a crucial role in maintaining focus during a conference. How proper nutrition boosts the performance of both brain and body is key. Many conference hotels have embraced the latest insights into the link between performance and nutrition, incorporating brain food into their offerings.
Long session? High-focus work? Brain and body need to stay fit. Many conference hotels have taken the latest findings on the connection between performance and nutrition to heart, incorporating brain food into their menus. The saying ‘We eat with our eyes’ has been confirmed by researchers at Cornell University years ago: Not only does the amount on the plate matter, but also the appearance and presentation of the food affect eating behavior. Above all, the brain eats too, as it consumes more than 20 percent of our daily energy needs.
Brain Food Boosts Concentration
“Nutritional Cognitive Neuroscience” is a relatively new field of science focused on how our diet affects brain metabolism. Its favorite topic: neuro nutrition or brain food – a diet rich in fiber, fruits, and vegetables that is essential for optimal brain function. This results in improved brain performance and mood, enhanced concentration and creativity, reduced stress, and deeper sleep.
When the brain is well-nourished, it can operate at full capacity during the day and regenerate at night. To keep your mind sharp, fresh, and efficient during a conference, optimal nutrition is key. It should be light, digestible, and filling – rich in vitamins and minerals but not calorie-dense or heavy. Ideal foods include fresh and varied options like fruits and yogurt, nuts and granola bars, colorful smoothies, vegetables, rice, and fish. Marbach Castle recognizes this and offers such “brain food.” For example, nuts and dried fruits are always available, fruits, smoothies, and healthy snacks during coffee breaks, and dishes like salmon fillet with wild rice and spinach or stuffed chicken breast with Mediterranean vegetables for lunch in the form of our Quick-Lunch.
Foods with Benefits:
- Vegetables and Salads: Rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber, these promote brain circulation and are ideal for both satiety and boosting mental clarity.
- Whole Grains and Wild Rice: Provide magnesium and B-vitamins essential for nerve and brain health. Complex carbohydrates in these foods, such as in whole grain bread, quinoa, polenta, beans, oats, and bananas, help maintain steady blood sugar levels, supporting prolonged focus and energy.
- Poultry: Alongside spinach, chanterelles, and legumes, poultry is a great source of iron, crucial for oxygen transport in the blood to the organs and brain. It’s also low in fat and easily digestible.
- Olive Oil: Contains essential unsaturated fatty acids that protect cardiovascular health and vitamin E, which supports brain circulation.
- Dairy and Soy Products: Provide protein and amino acids, which are vital for producing neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, known as “happiness hormones,” and essential for communication between brain regions.
- Fish: A top source of omega-3 fatty acids, crucial for brain function and nervous system health. Omega-3s also help combat high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Other good sources include seeds and nuts like almonds and walnuts, making them perfect snacks for breaks.
- Berries: Packed with antioxidants that enhance brain circulation and prevent vascular deposits, supporting overall brain health.

Brainfood also means: Stay Hydrated!
An essential rule for optimal brain function is to drink plenty of fluids. The body loses about 2.5 liters of fluid daily, so it’s crucial to keep the brain well-hydrated to ensure it receives adequate oxygen and nutrients. Aim for at least two liters of fluids per day.
Consistent hydration helps maintain good blood flow to the brain and supports its supply of oxygen and nutrients. While the gin and tonic at our Jägerbar is not included in your daily fluid intake, the best choices are (mineral) water, as it is calorie-free and rich in essential minerals. In moderate amounts, caffeine can also benefit the brain by widening blood vessels and enhancing concentration. Freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices and smoothies are excellent snacks for maintaining energy and hydration throughout the day.
