Changing Perspectives: An Employee’s Experience
Two days as a participant of the “Medbase Fit at Work” exclusive seminar!
As a marketing and sales employee at Marbach Castle, I had the opportunity to attend the 2-day exclusive seminar “Medbase Fit at Work.” I am personally very interested in fitness, enhancing performance through healthy nutrition, and corporate health management, so I was thrilled about this opportunity. On one hand, I enjoyed the ambiance of the castle as a participant and experienced firsthand how much effort all my colleagues from different departments put into making our stay enjoyable every day. On the other hand, I was able to further my knowledge in a topic I am passionate about.
From the Comfort Zone to the Panic Zone: New Approaches to Healthy Habits
The two days were packed with activities, yet I never felt stressed participating in the seminar. The entire Fit at Work team was very friendly, and a great group dynamic quickly developed among us participants. Patrick Stäuble, Managing Director of Fit at Work, opened the seminar. His lively, relaxed, and humorous manner heightened our anticipation for the content of the coming two days. I was particularly surprised by the introduction round. After the usual: where are you from, what do you do, and what do you hope to gain from the seminar, we were asked to openly answer what gives us energy and what drains our energy. These two questions quickly helped me settle into the seminar and gave me the feeling that the next two days would delve deeply.
Kathrin Linkner’s presentation, the nutrition expert on the team, was particularly interesting to me as it dealt with the comfort zone. We all know very well how a balanced and healthy diet should work, but we often don’t implement it. We drink too little, don’t exercise, or if we do want to, we find a hundred excuses not to.
Ultimately, it’s about leaving the comfort zone and entering the panic zone. The panic zone is initially uncomfortable, but if we manage to restructure our habits in this zone, we will also reshape our comfort zone with good life habits. It’s like redecorating a room in the house. At first, it’s new and you might stub your toe on a piece of furniture that has never been there before, but over time, you get used to it, and your awareness guides you around that edge as if the furniture had always been there. I find that the theory of the comfort zone can be applied to so many topics, whether it’s healthy eating or new goals in life.
Diverse Program and Valuable Insights for Corporate Health
As participants, we were guided through an extremely varied program where the diversity was palpable. We were presented with various topics, such as fat metabolism, nutrition, and a fitness check that included measuring body fat percentage. For the latter, I would have preferred to briefly hide in the office as an employee. But no chance! It was beneficial that Marbach Castle offers a wide range of conference rooms where groups can retreat. Understandably, this situation was appreciated by all participants during the body measurement, and everyone was grateful for some discretion when privately sharing their body fat percentage. The fitness check in the park, where we were equipped with heart rate monitors and belts to run in different intensity zones to determine our personal pulse value for effective training in fat metabolism, was also very enlightening.
Throughout the seminar, there were frequent breaks. During these times, I observed how the other participants reacted to the castle’s surroundings, what they particularly enjoyed at lunch, which dessert was the best during the coffee break, how the homemade nut mixes were roasted, and how the soap in the rooms smelled and whether it was available for purchase. I also noted the history of the castle and how beautifully our quick lunches were presented. Everyone particularly liked our small oil pipettes—and I did too. I was especially impressed by the service provided by our conference professionals; after each longer break, our glasses were replaced and fresh water bottles were provided.
The group work on corporate health management (BGM) was very engaging. I was excited to see what initiatives other companies had already implemented in this important area and how much knowledge was present. We were given three sheets to note down what measures our company had already implemented in health management, what we would like to see, what still needs to be implemented, and how we would measure the success of these strategies. From large corporations to small businesses, the most creative solutions for improving employee health were presented, ranging from psychological first aid hotlines to modern and actionable guidelines for employees, and even mental health representatives within companies. In the end, the group work became a valuable exchange of experiences where everyone could learn from each other.
Marbach Experience
Conclusion:
My conclusion from the seminar and the surrounding experiences is that I left feeling energized despite a long day of sessions. This is partly due to the inspiring input from Patrick Stäuble and his team, and partly because Marbach Castle is simply a special place. It’s a place where you can feel that a lot has happened and much more will happen, whether it’s for teams going into retreat, for leaders needing such inspiring environments, or for colleagues becoming teams. And last but not least, for us employees who are fortunate enough to help create such a wonderful place.
